This course surveys some of the masterpieces of world literature from the Old Testament and Homer to the present. It introduces students to the literature and ideas which have been important in the development of various cultural traditions, through reading, analysis, and writing about some of that literature.

Some of the greatest classics of all time are tales of seafaring adventure. In our class, we will experience ancient and modern stories, novels, and poems about sea voyages and mariners. Some possible selections: Homer’s Odyssey, Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Melville’s Moby Dick, London’s The Sea Wolf, Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and other exotic tales of the South Seas.
